Surveillance footage captured the moment a father fought off a burglar at his home in the Pico-Robertson area, but only after the thief made off with thousands of dollars in recording equipment. Video of the burglary shows the thief, his face covered, wiping his fingerprints off Daniel Lobell’s school bus turned mobile recording studio.  “I haven’t been able to sleep in days and every little noise, I jump up to protect my family,” Lobell told KTLA.  A comedian, Lobell owns the bus, which he parks behind his home. The bus is his office where he records his popular podcast “Modern Day Philosophers,” a show that features comics talking about philosophy. The mobile recording studio, which he also uses for other productions, is his livelihood.  Video captures fatal South L.A. hit-and-run; suspect remains at large “I worked my ass off to build this business so that I could stand on my own two feet and do something, a business that I know I'm good at, that I know I ca...

FDA Considers OTC Birth Control Pill, But Some Say It Wouldn’t Work For Everyone

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:36 GMT

Access to birth control options is instrumental for sexually active people to avoid pregnancy. Right now, there’s a discussion about whether or not a certain OTC birth control pill is feasible to sell to consumers without a prescription. But the FDA raised some concerns about this certain contraceptive becoming an over-the-counter drug. Why Access to an OTC Birth Control Pill Is More Important Than EverSince the Supreme Court overturned abortion rights under the US Constitution, many are now seeking more contraceptive solutions to prevent unplanned and unwanted pregnancies. Even Senate President (Pro Tempore) Rodric Bray commented about this. He said, “We are going to work pretty hard on trying to make available contraception so we can have fewer unwanted, unplanned pregnancies in the first place. I think that is a good place to start,”It was only a matter of time before pharmaceutical companies would push for their contraceptives to be made readily available to those who need them —...

Tangerine Dream is Ever Evolving

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:36 GMT

Tangerine Dream is Ever Evolving: While Kraftwerk are often, quite rightly, credited with being electronic music pioneers, fellow Germans Tangerine Dream formed in 1967, a full three years before Kraftwerk. It’s not a competition, but it is amazing when considering just how long ago these guys were pushing boundaries. Particularly in the ’80s, their music could be heard on movies such as Firestarter and Legend, and TV shows like Street Hawk. The lineup of Tangerine Dream is ever evolving. Band leader Thorsten Quaeschning, for example, only joined in 2004. No current members of the group were in Tangerine Dream in the last millennium. Think of it as an orchestra.“It’s an everlasting evolving and morphing process, learning from every note ever played and combining things that were explored and set as rules inside our microcosm,” Quaeschning says. “We are combining Synthesizer from all decades, hardware, modular, software to come as close to the sound, crea...

Federal regulators have halted student debt-relief programs offered by three Orange County businesses that allegedly bilked students out of more than $12 million. Complaints filed April 24 in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana by the Federal Trade Commission target SL Finance LLC, BCO Consulting Services Inc. and SLA Consulting Services Inc, alleging the companies used deceptive claims about repayment programs and loan forgiveness that didn’t exist. The actions were filed under the Federal Trade Commission Act and Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act, among other legal protections. The FTC said the companies falsely claimed to be or be affiliated with the Department of Education, telling students the illegal payments would count toward their loans. The court has temporarily halted the schemes and frozen the assets of the three companies.Representatives with the businesses could not be reached for comment Monday, May 8.Samuel Levine, director of the agency’s Bureau o...

New bill could allow ranked choice voting in Santa Clara County

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:36 GMT

A new state bill from two Silicon Valley legislators could put Santa Clara County one step closer to adopting ranked choice voting.Assembly Bill 1227 has already cleared the assembly and is now headed to the state senate. The bill, by Assemblymembers Evan Low (D-San Jose) and Alex Lee (D-San Jose), would allow the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to decide if they want to adopt ranked choice voting for county elections. The voting method, which has picked up steam in recent years and is being used in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and San Leandro, has been controversial — especially after the Alameda County Registrar of Voters incorrectly tabulated the ranked choice voting results in an Oakland school board election last year.California law dictates that only cities — not counties — can change their voting methods on their own, which is why state legislation is needed before Santa Clara County could proceed with the change.Lee called ranked choice voting a ...

Are Santa Cruz County drivers more pleasant than either Bay Area or LA drivers?: Roadshow

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:36 GMT

Q: Hey Mr. Roadshow Dude, I’m enjoying your readers’ comments comparing L.A. to Bay Area drivers. Having lived most of my life in the Bay Area and several years in L.A., I did not experience tangible differences between drivers in the two regions. Just over a year ago, my wife and I moved from the Bay Area to the Central Coast in southern Santa Cruz County. I can confidently report that drivers in this region are, overall, 10 times better drivers than in either of the two large metropolitan areas. It is rare to witness the flipping of the bird, tailgating or even horn honking. Driving on heavily traveled non-freeway county roads is an amazing experience as most drivers leave plenty of space between cars when going 45 mph or above. I chalk it up to the chill-out beach mentality of the region.J.D. Sorensen, CorralitosA: Let’s move to Corralitos … your traffic sounds great.Q: Highway 17 is a mountain road, not a freeway, and drivers have to realize that common s...
