House approves nearly $14.5 billion in military aid for Israel

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:27:42 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House approved a nearly $14.5 billion military aid package Thursday for Israel, a muscular U.S. response to the war with Hamas but also a partisan approach by new Speaker Mike Johnson that poses a direct challenge to Democrats and President Joe Biden. In a departure from norms, Johnson's package required that the emergency aid be offset with cuts in government spending elsewhere. That tack established the new House GOP's conservative leadership, but it also turned what would typically be a bipartisan vote into one dividing Democrats and Republicans. Biden has said he would veto the bill, which was approved 226-196, with 12 Democrats joining most Republicans on a largely party-line vote. Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:27:42 GMT

LONDON — Elon Musk sat down with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London’s Lancaster House on Thursday night for a chat that veered closer to “love-in” than interview. In the lavish gold-trimmed room where Theresa May gave one of her most famous Brexit speeches, the tech tycoon and British PM were joined by an audience that included Cabinet ministers, tech execs and — somewhat improbably — the American rapper will.i.am.Here’s what we learned as the conversation unfolded:Elon thinks you won’t need to workThe world’s richest man predicted a “future of abundance” from advances in AI models. “There will come a point where no job is needed,” Musk said. “You can have a job if you want to have a job … but the AI will be able to do everything. I don’t know if that makes people comfortable or uncomfortable.” Sunak, who will be out of a job himself after the next U.K. election if current polls are correct, laughed along nervously. Rishi should leave the journalism to the pros...

Baltimore Sun columnist Mike Preston will answer fans’ questions throughout the Ravens season. Coming off Baltimore’s 31-24 win in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals, plenty of questions remain heading into a Week 9 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Here’s Preston’s take:(Editor’s note: Questions have been edited for length and clarity.)I am sure Mike Macdonald will be getting a number of interviews for head coaching vacancies once the season is over. I would hate to see the Ravens lose him. Do you think there is any way the Ravens can keep him? Perhaps give him a hefty raise and promise him that he will be the Ravens’ head coach once Harbaugh steps down? — Joe DeaselIt depends on the team making the offer. Macdonald is young, smart and will have his options if the defense continues to play well.
