Trump forum a big test for CNN, moderator Kaitlan Collins

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s town hall forum on CNN on Wednesday is the first major television event of the 2024 presidential campaign — and a gigantic test for the chosen moderator, Kaitlan Collins. Both sides of the political divide expressed suspicion when the CNN forum at New Hampshire’s St. Anselm College was announced last week. Some Democrats question whether the former president should be given the airtime, while Republicans wonder if a network Trump has long disparaged can be fair.Once it begins, Collins must give audience members the chance to ask questions while determining when to step in with her own. She’ll weigh how to correct misinformation in a potentially hostile environment: Invited town hall participants are those who expect to vote in a Republican primary.“It’s a balance beam and it can be walked,” said Frank Sesno, a former CNN Washington bureau chief now at George Washington University. “We’re going to see if Kaitlan is worthy of...

O'Fallon family basement damage due to the city's sewer backup

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:00:14 GMT

O'FALLON, Mo. - When a family from O'Fallon in St. Charles County returned home to find their entire basement swamped with raw sewage and human waste, it was a nightmare. It was because of a backup in the city’s main sewer, which had apparently become clogged with tree roots and other materials. The struggle for the family is that they can’t get much help. Their house was declared a biohazard. They had to relocate to a hotel for three weeks with two children, one of whom is a four-year-old with special needs. The cleanup cost $10,000, and another $7,000 was needed to replace floors and walls. The cost kept rising. It’s been heartbreaking for Rylee Rooneo and her husband, Jason."Now, the city is telling us that they’re not liable even though they’ve had our lateral scoped, and it’s 100 percent not on us," she said. "They agree with us that there’s nothing that we could have done to prevent this. They’re saying that it’s deemed an act of God because we have to prove that they knew about ...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lonnie Walker scored all of his 15 points in a phenomenal fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied late to take a 3-1 series lead with a 104-101 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 on Monday night.LeBron James scored 27 points and Anthony Davis had 23 points and 15 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Lakers, who moved to the brink of an improbable trip to the Western Conference finals with their eighth consecutive home victory since March.Los Angeles overcame Stephen Curry's third career postseason triple-double down the stretch largely because of Walker, who has made a seismic impact in returning to the Lakers' rotation in this series after the former starter was stuck on the bench in recent weeks.Walker went 6 for 9 in the fourth quarter and hit the go-ahead jumper with 1:53 to play. Curry’s layup with 1:05 left trimmed the Lakers’ lead to one point, but Curry missed a long jumper and a 3-point attempt on Golden State’s next possession before ...

Steph Curry’s triple-double not enough as Warriors collapse, Lakers win Game 4

LOS ANGELES — Stephen Curry did what he’s done so many times before Monday night. He stepped up for his team, which was facing a 2-1 series deficit entering Game 4. And Curry did everything in his power to put the Warriors in a position to win.But Curry’s first playoff triple-double since 2019 wasn’t enough in the end to keep the Lakers at bay as they pulled off a stunning 104-101 win to take a 3-1 series lead over the defending champs.Curry’s layup bounced in with a little more than a minute left to make it a one-point game. He was fouled by Austin Reeves as he tried to swoop in and grab a rebound. But Curry missed back-to-back shots over Anthony Davis the Warriors’ next possession. And Moses Moody fouled Lonnie Walker IV, the Lakers surprising hero of the fourth, after he grabbed the rebound with 15 seconds left.Walker made his two free throws to give the Lakers a 3-point lead.Off of a timeout, Davis recovered a Draymond Green turnover, but the W...

Anomalous inning from DeSclafani sinks SF Giants vs. Nationals in second straight loss

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:00:14 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — The Nationals had a clear plan, and they used it to slice and dice Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani for five runs before San Francisco even came to bat.Leadoff hitter Lane Thomas began the game by taking ball one, and the Nationals wouldn’t leave the bats on their shoulders many more times. Thomas connected on the next pitch for a single into left field. The next batter, Luis Garcia, singled on the next pitch. Not a single National saw more than four pitches in the first inning, but seven of the at-bats ended in hits, five of whom crossed the plate by the time DeSclafani recorded three outs. The early hole proved too large for the Giants (15-19) against Nationals rookie starter Jake Irvin, who tossed 6⅓ shutout innings in his second major-league start and sent San Francisco to its second straight loss, 5-1, in front of 20,502 fans at Oracle Park, the second-lowest announced attendance of the season.“It happened very quick,” said DeSclafani, who exha...

UK official visits Hong Kong in years after strained ties

HONG KONG (AP) — The first British minister visiting Hong Kong in five years said his country will not “duck” its historic responsibilities to people living in its former colony while engaging with China in areas they share common interests. The remarks by Dominic Johnson, minister of state in the Department for Business and Trade, were published in an opinion piece in the South China Morning Post on Tuesday. He wrote that the U.K. will be clear about its right to act when China breaks its international commitments or abuses human rights.Johnson’s trip this week came after relations between Hong Kong and Britain became increasingly tense following the enactment of a Beijing-imposed national security law, which the U.K. earlier called “a clear breach” of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. The declaration included a promise to retain Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms for 50 years after it was returned to China’s rule in 1997. Following the introduction of the sweeping securi...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rookie Jake Irvin struck out five in 6 1/3 innings and earned his first career victory, leading the Washington Nationals to a 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.Making his second career start and first on the road, Irvin didn’t give up a run in a dominant outing for the Nationals, who are in last place in the NL East. The 26-year-old right-hander limited the Giants to four hits and was backed by a defense that turned double plays in three of the first four innings. He walked three and lowered his ERA to 0.84.The outing was in contrast to Irvin’s MLB debut against the Chicago Cubs, when he hit a batter with his first pitch and got a no-decision after walking four in 4 1/3 innings.Luis García singled twice and had a multi-hit performance in his fourth consecutive game and CJ Abrams drove in two runs. Alex Call, the Nationals’ new everyday center fielder after Victor Robles was placed on the injured list earlier Monday, had an RBI dou...
